About Southtown
Southtown is a
community-based economic development
organization, formed to revitalize the commercial
corridors of South Alamo, South St. Mary's and
South Presa Streets and the surrounding King
William, Lavaca
and Blue
Star neighborhoods. Southtown's mission is to
create a human-scale urban village through the
strategies of historic preservation and responsive
urban design, support of the arts, business
development and aggressive promotion of the area.
Southtown is a Neighborhood
Commercial Revitalization project of the City
of San Antonio and an Urban
Main Street Program of the National
Trust for Historic Preservation, administered
through the Texas
Historical Commission.
On the immediate southside of
this city where arte es vida, San
Antonio's Southtown has served since 1991 as a
conceptual revitalization construct, where three
unique and diverse neighborhoods: the King William Historic
District with its mansions and bungalows; the Blue
Star Arts Complex, complete with artist
live/work spaces; and Lavaca,
San Antonio's oldest existing neighborhood.
Uniting these communities are
populations dense with artists and architects,
multigenerational families among newcomers—most
living in housing stock dating back to the turn of
the last century or no later than mid-century.
